Navigating the AI Revolution: A Conversation with Anika Collier Navaroli
The world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly evolving, shaping our lives in ways we are only beginning to understand. As this technology continues to permeate our daily lives, questions of ethics, bias, and accessibility become increasingly critical. At the forefront of this conversation is Anika Collier Navaroli, a leading voice in the field, whose work tackles these issues head-on.
Anika, a senior fellow at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University, is a seasoned technologist, having held key positions at Twitter and Twitch, where she championed trust and safety initiatives. Her path into the AI field started with a fascination for the intersection of technology and social change.
“About 20 years ago, I was working as a copy clerk in the newsroom of my hometown paper during the summer when it went digital," she explains, recounting her early experiences with the digital revolution. "Social media sites like Facebook were sweeping over my campus, and I became obsessed with trying to understand how laws built on the printing press would evolve with emerging technologies." This curiosity propelled her through law school, where she honed her focus on media law and policy. “I put it all together and wrote my master’s thesis about how new technology was transforming the way information flowed and how society exercised freedom of expression,” she says.
Anika’s work, however, extends beyond the theoretical realm. She has been a central figure in addressing the inherent biases that plague many AI systems. While leading research at the Data & Society Research Institute, she delved into the impact of early AI systems like facial recognition software and predictive policing tools. "My work there looked at how early AI systems were replicating bias and creating unintended consequences that impacted marginalized communities," she explains. This led her to Color of Change, where she spearheaded the first civil rights audit of a tech company, advocating for policy changes and tech accountability.
"I am the most proud of my work inside of technology companies using policy to practically shift the balance of power and correct bias within culture and knowledge-producing algorithmic systems," she affirms. At Twitter, she spearheaded campaigns that expanded the verification process to include underrepresented voices, including Black women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals. "This also included leading AI scholars like Safiya Noble, Alondra Nelson, Timnit Gebru, and Meredith Broussard," she adds, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and diverse perspectives in shaping the AI landscape.
Anika’s research, "Black in Moderation," further highlights the systemic biases prevalent in the tech industry. This groundbreaking project provided a platform for Black tech workers to share their experiences, sparking critical conversations about the challenges faced by marginalized individuals. "When I was working inside of tech companies, I also noticed that no one was really writing or talking about the experiences that I was having every day as a Black person working in Trust & Safety," she reveals, explaining the impetus for the research.
Navigating the male-dominated tech and AI industries is no easy feat. Anika, as a Black queer woman, has faced her own unique challenges. "As a Black queer woman, navigating male-dominated spaces and spaces where I am othered has been a part of my entire life journey," she acknowledges. " Within tech and AI, I think the most challenging aspect has been what I call in my research “compelled identity labor.” I coined the term to describe frequent situations where employees with marginalized identities are treated as the voices and/or representatives of entire communities who share their identities."
However, Anika advocates for setting boundaries and prioritizing the issues she’s passionate about. "Because of the high stakes that come with developing new technology like AI, that labor can sometimes feel almost impossible to escape," she says. "I had to learn to set very specific boundaries for myself about what issues I was willing to engage with and when."
As AI evolves, the potential for both immense good and unforeseen harm remains present. Anika identifies the use of synthetic data, AI-generated information, in training AI systems as one of the most pressing ethical issues. "Generative AI systems have already shown that based on their original training data, their output is to replicate bias and create false information. So the pathway of training new systems with synthetic data would mean constantly feeding biased and inaccurate outputs back into the system as new training data," she asserts. "I described this as potentially devolving into a feedback loop to hell."
This concern is heightened by the recent announcement that Meta’s latest AI chatbot, Llama 3, is partially powered by synthetic data. While lauded by Mark Zuckerberg as the "most intelligent" generative AI product on the market, this development raises serious questions about the potential for perpetuating and amplifying biases and misinformation.
Given the pervasiveness of AI in modern life, Anika emphasizes the importance of user awareness and collective action. "I’ve been arguing that technology advocates should come together and organize AI users to call for a People Pause on AI," she states. Drawing inspiration from the Writers Guild of America’s successful fight for fairer AI usage in the writing industry, she believes that organized collective action can create meaningful boundaries for the use of AI technologies.
"I also believe that if we pause now to fix the mistakes of the past and create new ethical guidelines and regulation, AI doesn’t have to become an existential threat to our futures," she concludes, outlining a vision for a future where AI is harnessed for good.
Towards this vision, Anika sees the need for both internal and external interventions. "My experience working inside of tech companies showed me how much it matters who is in the room writing policies, presenting arguments, and making decisions," she reflects. She highlights the importance of journalism education in equipping future tech leaders with the skills to navigate the complexities of AI ethics.
"I think [journalism] school gives people such unique training in interrogating information, seeking truth, considering multiple viewpoints, creating logical arguments, and distilling facts and reality from opinion and misinformation," she asserts. "I believe that’s a solid foundation for the people who will be responsible for writing the rules for what the next iterations of AI can and cannot do."
But internal reform alone isn’t enough. Anika advocates for external regulation to ensure ethical development and prevent the misuse of AI. "I argue that this should come in the form of a new agency to regulate American technology companies with the power to establish and enforce baseline safety and privacy standards," she proposes. This agency would be empowered to set clear guidelines and enforce compliance, ensuring that AI development aligns with ethical principles.
