Peak Design’s Outdoor Line: A New Era in Adventure Gear

San Francisco-based Peak Design, known for its sleek and functional designs, has made a name for itself in the world of photography and travel gear. Their Everyday Backpack, a mainstay amongst creative professionals and outdoor enthusiasts alike, has been lauded for its innovative features and versatility. Now, five years after introducing the Everyday Backpack, Peak Design is venturing into a new realm with the Outdoor Line, a collection of backpacks and slings meticulously crafted for adventures beyond the concrete jungle.

The Outdoor Line represents a significant shift for Peak Design, a deliberate evolution from their urban-focused legacy. As Peak Design Founder and CEO Peter Dering puts it, "Peak Design has been synonymous with ‘outdoor photography’ yet we still haven’t created true outdoor bags…until now. The Outdoor Line is not only the culmination of everything we’ve learned as bag designers, it’s also a giant nod to our most loyal and longest-tenured customers."

This new line embodies Peak Design’s dedication to advanced soft-goods design, incorporating numerous adjustment points for a personalized fit catering to various body types and loads. All bags are compatible with Peak Design’s modular packing cubes for easy organization and quick access to essentials like camera equipment, clothing, and gear.

The Outdoor Backpack: Built for the Wilderness

The Outdoor Backpack is offered in two sizes: a robust 45L (liters) model for carrying heavy loads, ideal for extended expeditions, and a more compact 25L version suited for shorter excursions. Both backpacks prioritize easy access and organization, featuring a quick-cinch roll-top for swift entry from the top and a unique splay-open design that allows you to completely open the pack from the back, offering "total visibility" of your gear. This feature makes packing and unpacking an effortless breeze.

Beyond its practical features, the Outdoor Backpack boasts several comfort-focused enhancements, including:

  • Internal Frame: The 45L model features an internal frame for added support and weight distribution, crucial for heavier loads.
  • Laptop Sleeve: A dedicated sleeve for your laptop keeps it safe and protected.
  • Hydration Pack Compatible: A designated sleeve accommodates hydration packs, complete with a drinking hose passthrough for convenient hydration on the go.
  • Slash-Proof and Weatherproof: The Outdoor Backpack is built with slash-proof materials for enhanced security and features weatherproof construction for protection against the elements. An optional Rain Fly is available for additional rain protection.
  • Superior Comfort and Fit: Peak Design promises that the Outdoor Backpack delivers "superior comfort and fit with significantly less bulk" compared to other backpacks, even their previous models.
  • Versatility in External Hauling: The Outdoor Backpack tackles external storage with deep pockets and a cord system for carrying bulky items like tripods, sleeping pads, jackets, and water bottles.

Weight Considerations: While both Outdoor Backpacks are built with durable materials, weight remains a crucial factor for long-distance trekkers. The 45L model tips the scales at 3.97 pounds (1.8kg), while the 25L version weighs 2.54 pounds (1.15kg). Although these weights might exceed those of some larger backpacking packs, the Outdoor Backpacks offer an advantage over previous Peak Design models like the 30L Everyday Backpack which weighs 3.88 pounds (1.76kg).

The Outdoor Sling: A Compact Companion

The Outdoor Sling is offered in two sizes: a 7L (0.74 pounds) option for carrying essentials and a smaller 2L (0.39 pounds) model for carrying only the bare necessities. Both slings are designed for quick conversion from crossbody to waist bags, providing ultimate versatility for different scenarios.

The larger 7L Outdoor Sling features stowable gear loops for securing items externally and can fit Peak Design’s smallest camera cube. Both slings are compatible with the shoulder straps of the Outdoor Backpacks, offering convenient chest-worn access to your essential gear.
