Threads: A Year and a Half in the Making, a Billion-User Dream in the Making

A year and a half ago, Threads was a mere twinkle in Mark Zuckerberg’s eye, a potential rival to Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter). Now, with over 175 million monthly active users, Threads has emerged as a serious contender in the social media landscape. This rapid growth, however, doesn’t tell the whole story.

While 175 million monthly users is a significant achievement for an app launched a year ago, Meta, Threads’ parent company, has conspicuously withheld daily user figures. This notable omission suggests that, unlike Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, Threads is still experiencing a considerable amount of fly-by traffic. Many users are still in the "trial phase," yet to become regular contributors to the platform.

Meta employees have confirmed that much of Threads’ growth stems from its integration with Instagram. The two apps share the same account system, a setup that is unlikely to change. This symbiotic relationship has provided Threads with a considerable head start, but it remains to be seen whether the app can attract users beyond its Instagram-driven initial user base.

Despite the reliance on Instagram integration, Zuckerberg is confident that Threads has the potential to become Meta’s next billion-user app. This ambition is not without merit, considering Threads’ rapid growth in a short timeframe, especially when compared to Meta’s past standalone app ventures. Meta is actively targeting new markets, particularly Japan, where they believe Threads can capitalize on a potential opening in the social media landscape, challenging X’s dominant position.

Financially, Threads is currently a loss leader for Meta, but the company can afford to invest indefinitely in its growth. Internally, Meta executives are considering introducing ads on the platform in the next year, though the exact details are still under wraps. Given the seamless integration possible with Instagram’s existing ad system, Threads has the potential to become a lucrative revenue generator for Meta.

Meta’s deliberate decision to downplay political content and encourage lighter, more entertaining content positions Threads as a potentially attractive alternative for advertisers seeking a safer environment than X, which has been criticized for its increasingly toxic atmosphere. "It would be great if it gets really, really big," said Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, when Threads launched, "but I’m actually more interested in if it becomes culturally relevant and if it gets hundreds of millions of users."

While Threads has made significant progress in terms of user numbers, its cultural relevance still needs further development. The app is yet to leave its mark on mainstream conversations and discussions. However, with sustained growth, Threads has a substantial runway to achieve this cultural impact.

To further solidify its position and achieve its billion-user goal, Threads needs to address several key challenges.

  • Building a robust community: While Threads has attracted millions of users, it needs to foster a thriving community where users feel engaged and connected. This requires cultivating a welcoming environment, encouraging diverse conversations, and combating spam and misinformation.
  • Improving discoverability: It’s crucial to make it easier for users to discover interesting content and conversations on Threads. Implementing better search functionalities, personalized recommendations, and featured threads can enhance user engagement.
  • Introducing more features: Threads has a relatively basic feature set compared to X. Expanding functionalities to include features like direct messaging, polls, and threaded replies can enhance user interactions and make the platform more engaging.
  • Addressing criticism: Threads has already faced criticism for its lack of certain features, its dependence on Instagram, and its privacy concerns. Open communication and addressing user concerns are paramount for maintaining user trust.

The battle for social media dominance is far from over. X remains a formidable force despite its struggles under Musk’s leadership. However, Threads’ rapid growth, coupled with Meta’s resources and ambitions, makes it a serious challenger.

Whether Threads can truly rival X, become Meta’s next billion-user app, and achieve cultural relevance remains to be seen. However, with strong backing from Meta and a dedicated user base, Threads has the potential to reshape the social media landscape and become a dominant presence in the years to come.
