A Second Look at "Alien Resurrection": A Wild, Ambitious, and Maybe Kind of Good Film
The "Alien" franchise has a unique place in cinematic history. With its groundbreaking visual effects, spine-chilling creature design, and compelling characters, it became a pop culture phenomenon. But like any beloved franchise, it has its share of ups and downs. And while "Alien 3" received lukewarm reception, "Alien Resurrection" was often considered the franchise’s low point. But is this deserved? I recently rewatched "Alien Resurrection" and found myself pleasantly surprised.
A Bold Departure:
"Resurrection" takes a bold, and perhaps risky, approach to the narrative. Set 200 years after the events of "Alien 3," the film begins with the resurrection of Ellen Ripley. But this isn’t the same Ripley we’ve come to know. She’s a clone, a vessel for the Alien Queen’s DNA, which is what the villainous scientists are after. This unexpected twist allows Sigourney Weaver to explore a new facet of Ripley, a character now grappling with the unsettling legacy of her alien heritage.
A Unique Blend of Characters:
The film showcases a diverse cast of characters, each contributing to the film’s strange and compelling atmosphere. We have Ron Perlman as the tough and brooding Gallow, Dan Hedaya as the cynical but ultimately sympathetic Dr. Wren, and Winona Ryder as Call, the android who, as we discover later, is a continuation of the Bishop/Ash lineage. Character actor luminaries like Brad Dourif, Raymond Cruz, Gary Dourdan, and Michael Wincott add further depth and intrigue to the film’s ensemble.
A Glimpse Behind the Curtain:
One of the most refreshing aspects of "Alien Resurrection" is the film’s willingness to show us the other side of the alien equation. We see the scientific facilities, the experimental containment cells, and the monstrous experiments that the scientists are conducting. It’s a glimpse into the darker side of humanity’s fascination with these creatures, a side that previous films only alluded to.
Where the Film Falls Short:
"Resurrection" isn’t without its shortcomings. The film’s special effects, while impressive for their time, have aged somewhat. The film also struggles to maintain the intense suspense and terror of its predecessors. The fast-paced action and lack of focus on individual character development leave little room for the gradual buildup of fear and tension that was so effective in earlier films.
A Bold, Imaginative, and Unforgettable Ending:
Despite its flaws, "Resurrection" delivers a bold and imaginative ending that truly leaves a lasting impression. The film culminates in the birth of a human/alien hybrid, a fascinating, if slightly grotesque, embodiment of the film’s overarching themes of humanity’s relationship with its creations and the potential consequences of genetic manipulation. While the hybrid’s design may not appeal to all viewers, it is a testament to the film’s willingness to push boundaries and explore the uncharted territories of the "Alien" universe.
A Reevaluation:
"Alien Resurrection" may not be the best film in the franchise, but it is far from the disaster it’s often made out to be. It’s a wild, ambitious film that, while lacking the depth of its predecessors, demonstrates a willingness to embrace the absurd and explore the darker corners of human nature. It’s a film that encourages us to look beyond the surface and appreciate the bold, unusual, and yes, even slightly disturbing, vision that Jean-Pierre Jeunet has brought to life.
Perhaps it’s time we reconsider "Alien Resurrection" and give it the credit it deserves for its bold storytelling, inventive creature design, and thought-provoking themes. It may not be a perfect film, but it is undoubtedly a unique and memorable one.
