The launch of Proton Docs is the latest step in Proton’s ambitious mission to provide a comprehensive suite of privacy-focused alternatives to mainstream digital services. The company’s existing platform already includes ProtonMail, ProtonVPN, ProtonDrive, ProtonCalendar, and ProtonPass, offering secure communication, browsing, file storage, calendar management, and password management, respectively.

Implementing end-to-end encryption at scale presents significant technical challenges, particularly for real-time collaborative editing involving multiple users. To overcome this hurdle, Proton leverages its expertise in open-source encryption and draws upon its existing version history system for ProtonDrive. This ensures that document changes are securely synchronized across users while maintaining complete encryption.

"We had to develop a sophisticated key exchange and synchronization mechanism to enable collaborative editing without compromising encryption," explains Yen.

Although a small number of encrypted document editors currently exist, they often lack the user-friendliness and feature-rich capabilities of their mainstream counterparts. Proton Docs aims to bridge this gap by offering a polished and user-friendly interface while maintaining uncompromising privacy.

"We built collaboration functionality into Proton Docs from the ground up," says Yen. "This includes real-time editing, commenting, and the ability to see who’s currently viewing the document."

While Proton is committed to user privacy, the company’s stance on law enforcement requests has drawn scrutiny in the past. In 2021, Proton faced controversy after being ordered to collect user metadata, prompting the company to update its policies. Today, Proton adheres to Swiss laws while remaining transparent about its data retention practices and law enforcement interactions.

"We are committed to providing the best possible privacy protection for our users," says Yen. "However, we also recognize the importance of working with law enforcement to address serious crimes. Our policies are designed to balance these sometimes competing interests."
