Making Your Smart TV A Video Conferencing Hub: Xiaomi Mi TV Webcam Review

While many tech companies focus on refining the smartphone experience, Xiaomi has taken a different approach, launching a range of unique devices and gadgets in India. From robot vacuum-mops and air purifiers to an even portable air compressor, Xiaomi explores niche markets and underserved segments. Their latest offering, the Mi TV Webcam, is a prime example. Priced at Rs. 1,999, it allows users to transform their smart TVs into video calling devices, bridging the gap between TVs and seamless communication. This review delves into the Mi TV Webcam’s capabilities, exploring its user-friendliness, features, and whether it truly delivers on its promise of convenient video conferencing.

A Sleek Design Meets Practicality

The Mi TV Webcam boasts a stylish design that sets it apart from many other webcams available in the market. Sporting a rectangular shape and a sleek metal outer casing, it feels premium in hand. The front features a 2-megapixel camera lens, accompanied by a useful physical sliding shutter for privacy when needed. Two microphones are neatly positioned on either side of the lens.

On the back, you’ll find a single USB Type-C port. Included in the package is a 1.5m USB Type-C to Type-A cable to connect the webcam to your television or computer. Notably, the Mi TV Webcam does not need a separate power source; it draws all the necessary power through the USB connection, simplifying setup.

The mounting mechanism is another highlight, designed for stability and flexibility. The webcam securely attaches to the top of most televisions and computer screens using a slim plastic base with a hook, a double-hinged curved arm, and a bottom plate featuring magnetism and a rubber coating for a secure grip. This design provides stability during use and makes it easy to detach without causing any fuss.

Full-HD Video and Crystal-Clear Audio

While many webcams priced below Rs. 2,000 offer 720p resolution video, the Mi TV Webcam stands out by offering full-HD (1920×1080 pixels) video at 25fps. This capability, paired with a 71-degree field of view, delivers crisp and detailed video for video calls. The webcam’s far-field stereo dual-microphone system with a claimed 4m voice pickup range ensures clear and reliable audio transmission during conversations.

Leveraging the Large Screen: Google Duo on Android TV

While some high-end smart TVs boast integrated cameras, these features remain a premium offering. The large screen of a smart TV presents an ideal canvas for comfortable video calls, making this device especially appealing for families and professionals.

To simplify the user experience, Xiaomi leverages the Android TV platform. The Mi TV Webcam is designed to work seamlessly with devices running Android TV 8 and later. To initiate video calls, users can download the Google Duo app from the Google Play Store on compatible televisions and streaming devices.

However, compatibility can be a barrier due to the fragmented and customized nature of Android TV across different devices. For instance, the Mi TV Webcam did not function with my dated MarQ 43SAFHD television running Android TV 8. However, when connected to the Xiaomi Mi Box 4K streaming device running Android TV 9, the Mi TV Webcam performed flawlessly during Google Duo calls.

A Streamlined Video Calling Experience

Using the Mi TV Webcam with the Xiaomi Mi Box 4K delivered a smooth and enjoyable video calling experience. The video quality was crisp, with decent picture and sound quality. The wide field of view made it easy to showcase the entire room or family members, ideal for group calls.

The webcam’s audio pickup proved effective within the claimed 4m range in a quiet room, showcasing its capability for both video and voice calls. Despite mounting the webcam on top of the television, the long cable allowed for easy connection to the Mi Box 4K without any hassle.

The Mi TV Webcam also works well on laptops and computers. While most modern laptops have decent built-in cameras, the Mi TV Webcam can provide a slight upgrade in image quality. While it seamlessly integrated with Google Duo, compatibility with other video calling platforms varied.

Verdict: A Great Niche Product, But Limited Functionality

The Mi TV Webcam is a well-designed, versatile webcam offering quality features at an affordable price. However, its target audience is niche, catering primarily to those who desire a convenient solution for video calls through their smart TVs. The limitation to Google Duo on Android TV currently restricts its use with other popular video calling platforms.

While the Mi TV Webcam offers a decent upgrade for laptops with built-in cameras, you’ll need to manage extra wires and setup steps. However, for those seeking a dedicated camera for their Android TV devices, the Mi TV Webcam presents a more convenient option than using a smartphone camera.

If you’re looking to transform your smart TV into a video conferencing hub, the Mi TV Webcam is a solid choice. However, if you seek broader compatibility and access to various video calling services, you may need to explore other options.
