Embrace the Darkness: How to Enable Dark Mode in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides

If you’re a fan of dark mode and spend hours working with Google’s suite of productivity tools, you’re in for a treat. Google has finally brought the beloved dark theme to Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides, offering a more visually appealing and battery-saving experience. This guide will walk you through enabling dark mode across Android, iOS, and web platforms, making your workflow smoother and more comfortable.

How to Enable Dark Mode in Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets on Android

The dark theme feature is a recent rollout, so you might not see it immediately on your Android device. However, it should be available soon. We’ve tested this feature on a Google Pixel 2 XL running Android 11 beta, and it works flawlessly.

Here’s how to enable dark mode:

  1. Open Google Docs, Slides, or Sheets on your Android device. The process is identical for all three apps.
  2. Tap the hamburger icon (three horizontal lines), go to Settings, and tap Choose theme.
  3. Select Dark to activate dark mode for the app.

If you want to preview a specific file in light theme without changing the app’s overall theme, follow these steps:

  1. Open Google Docs, Slides, or Sheets.
  2. With dark theme activated, open a file, tap the three-dot vertical icon, and select View in Light theme.

How to Enable Dark Mode in Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets on iOS

Enabling dark mode on iOS requires a slight tweak in your device’s settings. Follow these instructions:

  1. Download Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets from the App Store if you haven’t already.
  2. Before opening the apps, enable Smart Invert on your iOS device. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > toggle Smart Invert on.
  3. Exit Settings and launch any of the Google Apps. Your documents will now be presented in dark mode!

This method works well for previewing documents in dark mode, but it’s not a complete dark mode solution for iOS. This is because Smart Invert doesn’t always perfectly translate all colors and elements. You can turn off Smart Invert once you’re done using the Google Apps.

For a quicker way to toggle Smart Invert on and off, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Control Center > scroll down and add Accessibility Shortcuts.
  2. Go back, tap Accessibility, scroll to the bottom, tap Accessibility Shortcut, and check Smart Invert.

Now, you can access the Control Center on your iPhone or iPad and enable or disable Smart Invert with a single tap on the Accessibility Shortcuts.

How to Enable Dark Mode in Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets on the Web

There’s no official way to enable dark mode for Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides directly within the web version. However, you can achieve this through Chrome’s settings:

  1. Open Google Chrome on your computer and enter chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark in the address bar.
  2. You’ll see Force Dark Mode for Web Contents as disabled. Enable this option and relaunch Chrome.

Once you’ve done this, you can now enjoy Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets in dark mode within Chrome.

Benefits of Dark Mode in Google’s Productivity Suite

Dark mode offers numerous advantages for users, especially those who work for extended periods. Here are some key benefits:

  • Reduced Eye Strain: Dark mode minimizes bright light emitted from the screen, reducing the strain on your eyes during long working sessions.
  • Improved Battery Life: Dark mode generally consumes less power, resulting in a longer battery life for your device.
  • Enhanced Visual Appeal: Many users find a dark theme more aesthetically pleasing, creating a more focused and professional environment.
  • Better Contrast: Dark mode improves contrast, making text easier to read and enhancing the overall experience.

A Brighter Future for Google Document Users

The arrival of dark mode in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides is a significant step toward a user-friendlier experience. With enhanced visual appeal, reduced eye strain, and improved battery life, dark mode is a welcome addition that enhances productivity and comfort for users. Whether you’re on Android, iOS, or the web, embracing the darkness in your Google document workflow is a decision you won’t regret.
