Say Goodbye to Manually Tracking Packages: Gmail’s New Feature Brings Delivery Information Right to Your Inbox

Gone are the days of frantically searching for tracking numbers and refreshing delivery websites. Gmail users on Android and iOS can now track their packages directly within their inbox, thanks to a new feature rolled out by Google. This game-changing update promises to simplify package management, saving time and reducing stress for online shoppers.

The Convenience of In-Inbox Package Tracking

No more copying and pasting tracking numbers – Gmail’s new feature lets you view the delivery status of your orders directly within the notification email. Just open the email related to your purchase, and the tracking information will be neatly displayed on top, indicating whether the package is shipped, in transit, or delivered.

Enabling the Tracking Feature

To enjoy this convenience, you’ll need to first enable package tracking in your Gmail app’s settings. The process is slightly different for Android and iOS users:

  • Android:
    • Tap the hamburger icon in the top left corner of the Gmail app.
    • Select "Settings".
    • Choose your email account.
    • Enable "Package tracking".
  • iOS:
    • Go to "Gmail Settings".
    • Select "Data Privacy".
    • Enable "Package tracking".

Accessibility and Availability

While this feature is currently live for Gmail users on Android and iOS, it’s important to note that it’s still not accessible on the Gmail web interface.

This feature was first announced in November 2022, ahead of the holiday season in the United States, a period known for an increase in online shopping. Google’s blog post at the time also highlighted an additional "summary" card, displayed at the top of the notification emails. This card was expected to provide an estimated arrival date and concise status updates, like "Arriving tomorrow" or "Delivered today". While the in-inbox package tracking is now live, the "summary" card feature hasn’t yet been implemented.

The Future of Package Tracking in Gmail

This new feature marks a significant step towards streamlining the package delivery experience for Gmail users. Google’s focus on user convenience is evident in their efforts to integrate this feature directly into the inbox.

While the feature is currently limited to mobile users and excludes the web interface, Google’s commitment to enhancing the Gmail experience suggests that this feature could be expanded to encompass more platforms and functionalities in the future.

This initiative has the potential to reshape how we manage our online purchases, freeing up time and simplifying the often-stressful process of monitoring package delivery. The convenience of having order status readily available within our inboxes is a welcome change, contributing to a more efficient and informed online shopping experience.
