The Foldable Revolution: How Samsung and New Entrants Spark a Surge in Shipments

The foldable smartphone market has blossomed in recent months, exceeding earlier estimates with a remarkable surge in shipments during the third quarter of 2023. This growth can be attributed to two key factors: the highly anticipated launch of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 in July, and the emergence of new players in the market, particularly from Chinese brands.

According to the Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), foldable smartphone shipments in Q3 2023 registered a staggering 215 percent Quarter-on-Quarter (QoQ) and 16 percent Year-on-Year (YoY) increase, reaching a record 7 million units. This surpasses the previous record of 6.1 million units set in Q3 2022 by 16 percent, exceeding initial projections. Samsung dominated the market with a commanding 76 percent share, driven by strong demand in European markets.

Huawei secured the second position with a 9 percent market share, fueled by the release of its Huawei Mate X3 in March. This book-style foldable smartphone boasts a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, a 4,800mAh battery with 66W wired and 50W wireless charging support, a 7.85-inch (2,224×2,496 pixels) OLED inner display, and a 6.4-inch OLED (1,080×2,504 pixels) cover panel.

Honor took third place with an 8 percent share, powered by its Magic V2 model. Another book-style foldable, the Magic V2 runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and a 5,000mAh battery with 66W Honor SuperCharge support, offering a 7.92-inch interior display (2,344 x 2,156 pixels) and a 6.43-inch outer screen (2,376 x 1,060 pixels).

However, the DSCC report predicts a 35 percent QoQ decline in foldable smartphone shipments in Q4 2023, although with a 47 percent YoY increase to 3.6 million units. Samsung’s market share is also projected to drop to 42 percent.

Beyond Samsung: New Players Fuel the Foldable Boom

The rise in foldable smartphone shipments can be attributed to the emergence of new players such as Google, OnePlus, and Tecno.

Google’s Pixel Fold, OnePlus’ OnePlus Open, and Tecno’s Phantom V Flip and Phantom V Fold have collectively contributed to the overall growth. These new entrants bring diverse offerings and cater to varied consumer preferences, broadening the appeal of foldable technology.

The Appeal of Foldable Phones: A Shift Beyond Novelty

The increasing popularity of foldable phones indicates a shift beyond mere novelty. These devices offer a compelling blend of functionality and portability.

  • Expanded Screen Real Estate: Foldable phones provide a larger screen, rivaling tablets, without sacrificing pocketability. This is perfect for multitasking, immersive entertainment, and productivity.
  • Enhanced Productivity: The flexibility allows for convenient multitasking, with separate apps running simultaneously on both screens. This can be a game-changer for professionals and students.
  • Refined Design and User Experience: Recent models feature improved hinges, slimmer profiles, and refined software experiences, addressing earlier concerns about durability and usability.

Looking Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities

While the foldable market is thriving, several challenges remain:

  • Price Barrier: Foldable phones remain more expensive compared to traditional smartphones, limiting their accessibility for many.
  • Maturity of the Ecosystem: Foldable-specific apps and content are still in their infancy, and developers need to optimize applications for these devices.
  • Sustainability and Durability: Concerns about long-term durability and battery life persist.

However, the future of foldable smartphones is promising:

  • Increased Competition: Competition is driving innovation, leading to improved design, more affordable options, and a wider range of functionalities.
  • Evolving Technology: New technologies like improved hinge mechanisms, shatter-resistant displays, and more powerful batteries will further enhance the user experience.
  • Growing Consumer Demand: With increasing consumer awareness and adoption, the foldable market is poised for continued growth.

Conclusion

The foldable smartphone market is in a period of rapid growth, driven by Samsung’s dominance, the emergence of new players, and the increasing appeal of foldable technology. This surge in shipments signals a potential paradigm shift in the mobile industry, moving beyond traditional smartphones and embracing a new era of dynamic and adaptable devices. As the market evolves, challenges remain, but the future holds exciting possibilities for foldable technology, with potential for greater innovation, affordability, and adoption.
