Elehear Beyond: Bigger Isn’t Always Better in the World of Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids

My initial experience with Elehear’s Alpha Pro over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids was overwhelmingly positive. The Alpha Pro, a traditional behind-the-ear (BTE) device designed for individuals with mild hearing loss, stood out for its solid price point of $459, user-friendly online audiologist session, and innovative "remote sound" feature. This impressive combination even earned it a runner-up position in my "Best Hearing Aids" guide earlier this year. However, Elehear’s latest offering, the Elehear Beyond, while promising enhanced features, presented a different story. This review will delve into the specifics of my experience with the Elehear Beyond, analyzing its strengths and weaknesses to provide a comprehensive assessment.

Hardware: A Giant Leap Backward?

The most immediate difference between the Alpha Pro and the Beyond lies in their physical size. While the Alpha Pro is relatively compact, the Beyond is significantly larger. At 4.75 grams, the Beyond is noticeably heavier than its predecessor, and nearly double the weight of competitors like the Jabra Enhance Select 500 (2.56 grams). This substantial size difference was immediately apparent upon unboxing and even more so when wearing them. The Beyond’s bulkiness is undeniable; they are far from discreet and caused my ears to stick out more prominently. Visual appeal isn’t the sole concern; the increased size also translates to a less comfortable fit for some users, potentially leading to irritation or discomfort during prolonged wear.

The larger size raises questions about Elehear’s design choices. While increased size might accommodate more powerful components or larger batteries, ultimately the noticeable bulk outweighs any potential advantages in terms of user experience. This is a crucial point for potential buyers as comfort and discreetness are essential factors influencing the decision to adopt hearing aids, especially OTC options.

Audio Quality: A Rattling Disappointment?

Beyond its physical attributes, the Elehear Beyond’s audio quality also fell short of my expectations. From the initial moment of use, I noticed a persistent background noise. This wasn’t a subtle hiss but a more noticeable rattle, akin to the sound of a worn-out fan scraping against metal. This was disconcerting and surprisingly prominent, even with the amplification set at relatively low levels. The presence of this intrusive background noise overshadowed any potential benefits of the increased frequency range and noise cancellation promised by Elehear.

While the Alpha Pro fared well in suppressing background noise, the Beyond’s performance in this crucial area was disappointing. This suggests that the increase in size and purportedly advanced technology did not translate into an improvement in sound quality. In fact, it appears to have negatively impacted the overall listening experience. The inherent rattle significantly detracts from the clarity and fidelity of audio reproduction. This raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of the noise cancellation feature, a key selling point of the Beyond.

Features and Functionality: More is Not Necessarily Better

The Elehear Beyond boasts a range of features designed to enhance the user experience, including an improved operational frequency range and a tinnitus mode. While these additions are beneficial in theory, their practical implementation, at least from my experience, left much to be desired.

The app interface, while intuitive, did not seamlessly integrate with the hearing aids. There was a noticeable latency at times, and the controls exhibited inconsistent behavior. Although adjusting volume and utilizing speech enhancement settings were possible, the overall experience felt clumsy and less refined than competing applications.

The tinnitus mode, a feature eagerly anticipated by many individuals experiencing tinnitus, also proved to be somewhat underwhelming. While it provided a certain amount of relief, the sound generated was rather artificial and did not effectively mask the tinnitus for extended periods. The effectiveness of this mode may vary significantly across individuals, highlighting the need for a more personalized approach.

The Verdict: A Step Back for Elehear?

The Elehear Beyond, while intended as an improvement over the Alpha Pro, ultimately falls short of expectations. The significant increase in size detracts from comfort and aesthetics, and the unexpectedly high level of background noise significantly degrades the overall auditory experience. While the expanded functionality including the tinnitus mode and improved frequency range are commendable additions on paper, these enhancements are overshadowed by the shortcomings in sound quality and the less-than-stellar user experience.

Considering the relatively high price point, the drawbacks of the Elehear Beyond make it a less attractive option compared to its predecessor and similar products on the market. While the Alpha Pro provided a compelling solution for mild hearing loss at a competitive price, the Beyond falls short of offering a noticeable improvement. Therefore, based on my experience, I cannot recommend the Elehear Beyond as a superior alternative to its predecessor or competitive OTC hearing aids that offer a greater balance of functionality, comfort, and audio quality.

Elehear’s journey into the OTC hearing aid market showcases the complexities of developing affordable and high-quality assistive devices. While the company’s commitment to innovation and inclusion is undeniable, "more" does not always equate to "better." The Elehear Beyond’s shortcomings reveal the necessity of prioritizing user experience and refined audio performance alongside the introduction of novel features. Future iterations would greatly benefit from addressing these critical areas to regain trust and provide a truly effective and enjoyable hearing aid experience for users.
