Rick and Morty: The Anime – A New Dimension of Shenanigans

Rick and Morty fans rejoice! The beloved sci-fi comedy is taking on a new form with "Rick and Morty: The Anime", a brand-new series set to premiere on Adult Swim this August. This isn’t just a simple reskin, though. This anime adaptation, helmed by director Takashi Sano, promises a fresh take on the interdimensional adventures that has everyone’s interdimensional goggles glued to their screens.

A New Dimension of Story

While the familiar faces of Rick and Morty will be leading the charge, this new series isn’t just a rehash of the original. "Rick and Morty: The Anime" draws inspiration from Takashi Sano’s previously released Adult Swim shorts, which explored the world of Rick and Morty in a unique, anime-infused style. These shorts proved so popular that a full-fledged series was born, a testament to Sano’s ability to capture the essence of the franchise while adding his own signature flair.

Respecting the Source

The creators behind "Rick and Morty: The Anime" stressed the importance of staying true to the original series. Producer Joseph Chou, acting as a translator for Sano, emphasized, "He was really honored to take on the series… Already, a strong template was built in the original series, and he just really wanted to make sure he respected that… he just wanted to make sure the universe and characters stayed intact."

While staying true to the foundation of Rick and Morty’s universe, Sano sees this new series as an opportunity to explore uncharted territory, specifically the element of time. Chou explains, "[Sano] wanted to put another curveball in there, with the element of time… [and] he wanted to focus on Morty having a bit of a romance throughout the series. He used that as a sort of springboard to connect all the different stories that [are] happening in different universes and in the multiverse through different times."

A Fresh Perspective

The decision to explore the concept of time in "Rick and Morty: The Anime" isn’t just a whimsical choice. By adding this temporal layer, Sano introduces a new dimension to the multiverse, further expanding the scope of the story and offering opportunities for exciting new storylines.

The Anime Influence

While Sano was determined to remain faithful to the heart of Rick and Morty, he also recognized the opportunity to infuse his unique anime sensibility into the show. "He really enormously enjoyed making the show and is just really excited that he’s here to share this with you guys," Chou shared.

"Rick and Morty: The Anime" isn’t simply an anime adaptation for the sake of being different. Sano is embracing the medium, adding his own interpretations and influences to create a new, visually stunning interpretation of the classic Rick and Morty universe. This creative approach promises to deliver a unique experience for both long-time fans and newcomers to the world of Rick and Morty.

More Than Just an Anime

Despite the name "Rick and Morty: The Anime", the creators emphasize that this is not an anime series designed solely for anime enthusiasts. "He really didn’t occur to him that he was doing something very, very different to try to make this into an anime, or bring a lot of his experiences in the world of anime into this… But if he just did what the franchise does, he’d just become a cheap copy, and he didn’t want that," said Chou.

The goal is to create an experience that transcends genre boundaries, catering to a broad audience seeking humor, adventure, and an outlandish dose of science fiction. "We didn’t want to make it an anime show necessarily just for anime fans, but rather something for everyone to enjoy," Chou affirmed.

The Premiere Awaits

"Rick and Morty: The Anime" is set to premiere on August 15th at midnight on Adult Swim, with a subsequent release on Max the following day. For those eager to experience the Japanese version with English subtitles, the series will be available on Adult Swim’s Toonami programming starting August 17th at midnight.

A New Chapter in the Rick and Morty Universe

"Rick and Morty: The Anime" stands as more than just a mere adaptation. It’s a unique creation, expertly crafted by Sano to present a new dimension to the beloved franchise. This new series promises a blend of classic Rick and Morty humor, outrageous science fiction twists, and a distinct anime flair, creating a visually captivating and entertaining experience that’s sure to appeal to fans of all ages and backgrounds.

Get ready to embark on a new interdimensional adventure with Rick, Morty, and a whole new wave of anime-inspired shenanigans in "Rick and Morty: The Anime", premiering this August on Adult Swim and Max.**
