River: Building a Bitcoin-Only Brokerage on a Foundation of Security and Trust

In the ever-evolving landscape of cryptocurrency, where innovation and disruption are constant, River stands out as a beacon of stability and security. This Bitcoin-only brokerage, founded in February 2019 by Alexander Leishman, has carved out a unique niche by staying true to its core principles: Bitcoin maximalism and the "not your keys, not your coins" philosophy.

Leishman’s Vision: Driven by his background in aerospace engineering, computer science, and extensive experience in the tech industry, Leishman brings a unique blend of technical acumen and financial understanding to River. This combination is evident in his unwavering dedication to creating a platform that prioritizes security above all else.

"Our number one focus above all else is always don’t fuck up," Leishman emphasizes. "People really underestimate that that doesn’t happen by default." This dedication to security stems from his deep understanding of the risks inherent in the crypto space. He believes that building a reliable and trustworthy Bitcoin brokerage requires constant vigilance and proactive risk management. "You have to actively spend 50 plus percent of your resources to contain entropy and make sure you’re always improving systems and procedures, building the automation and building everything you need to contain those risks and preempt new risks," he explains.

Building from the Ground Up: River distinguishes itself from other platforms by building its own custodial infrastructure. This means they have complete control over their services, unlike many other exchanges that rely on third-party custodians. "They can only use whatever their third-party decides to build," Leishman notes about exchanges using third-party custodians.

"Thinking like a good engineer leads to a good business," Leishman adds. His deep understanding of the technology allows River to develop its own secure multisig security model, providing clients with robust protection for their Bitcoin holdings.

The Bitcoin Ethos: River’s commitment to Bitcoin stems from Leishman’s belief in the power of decentralized finance. He was drawn to Bitcoin’s unique properties, seeing it as a potential antidote to the dangers of centralized power structures.

"The reason that I got into Bitcoin was because I went down the economics rabbit hole on the side in college," Leishman recalls. "I started reading about Austrian economics and eventually read The Denationalization of Money by Friedrich Hayek." This early exposure to Austrian economics instilled in him the belief that Bitcoin could revolutionize finance and challenge the status quo.

A Journey Rooted in Bitcoin: Leishman’s journey into the Bitcoin space began in 2014, when he landed his first job in the industry with MaiCoin, a Taiwanese Bitcoin exchange. He quickly established himself as a skilled security engineer, identifying and fixing vulnerabilities while building robust APIs for merchant services.

His time in the Bay Area, then the epicenter of the Bitcoin industry, proved to be formative. He witnessed firsthand the early days of Bitcoin development, a period he describes as more experimental and less driven by financial motivations. "There wasn’t really this concept of Bitcoin maximalism," he says. "No one was offended by new coins because people would basically use these things to experiment with new ideas." This experience reinforced his belief that Bitcoin stood apart from other cryptocurrencies.

Building River: A Bitcoin-First Approach: Leishman’s experience and expertise culminated in the launch of River. The company’s mission was clear: to create a secure, user-friendly platform that would empower individuals to utilize Bitcoin as both a store of value and a medium of exchange.

River’s platform goes beyond simply offering brokerage services. It provides users with access to secure multisig wallets and integrates with the Lightning Network, offering a more efficient and cost-effective way to make transactions.

The Future of River: Looking ahead, Leishman envisions a future where Bitcoin becomes a more widely accepted medium of exchange. This will require seamless integration between Bitcoin and fiat currencies, a key area where River is focusing its efforts. "We’re entering an era where people are going to be saving in dollars and Bitcoin, and the seamless back and forth between Bitcoin and fiat is where we’re focused."

River’s commitment to Bitcoin, combined with its focus on security and user experience, positions it as a key player in the growing Bitcoin ecosystem. As Bitcoin adoption continues to rise, platforms like River will play a critical role in ensuring that users have secure and reliable access to this revolutionary technology.
