Meta, the social media giant, is finally addressing a long-standing complaint from its users: the lack of high-quality image sharing in Messenger. In a major update announced on April 9, 2024, the company introduced the ability to send HD photos, bringing Messenger in line with its sister app, WhatsApp, which implemented the feature back in September 2023. This upgrade, along with the new features of shared albums and larger file transfers, aims to enhance communication and connectivity within the platform.
Crisp Images, Shared Memories, and Larger Files: Messenger’s New Features Explained
High-Quality Image Sharing: Users can now enjoy crisp and detailed images when sharing them through Messenger. To send a photo in HD, simply turn on the HD toggle before hitting "Send" after selecting an image from the chat composer. Multiple HD photos can be sent by tapping on additional images.
Shared Albums: Messenger users can now create shared albums, a feature that allows individuals to pool photos and videos together within a chat to create a more comprehensive and collaborative experience. To create a shared album, select several photos from the chat composer and tap "Create Album", or long-press a photo in the chat and tap the same button. Additional photos can be added to existing albums by tapping "Add to album", and albums can also be renamed. All participants in the chat can view, add, delete, and download pictures and videos from the shared album, which can be accessed via the "Media" button in the chat.
Larger File Transfers: For sending documents larger than typical chat attachments, Messenger now allows users to share files up to 100MB in various formats, including Word, PDF, and Excel. This functionality can be accessed by tapping the "+" button on the chat menu, offering a more convenient alternative to email for sharing larger files.
Streamlining Connections: Messenger’s New QR Code Feature
In addition to file-sharing enhancements, Meta has added a QR code feature to Messenger, streamlining the connection process. Users can now simply scan a QR code found in the Settings to connect with others. The sender can also share their QR code through a link, eliminating the need for manual typing of names or numbers to initiate a chat.
