Google Messages, the ubiquitous Android messaging app, is reportedly introducing a new way for users to interact with Gemini, Google’s powerful and increasingly advanced AI chatbot. While the ability to converse with Gemini exists within the app, it currently requires several steps, making the process cumbersome. Google’s new floating action button (FAB) aims to streamline this process, bringing the power of AI directly to your fingertips.
The Gemini FAB: A Shortcut to AI Conversations
Android Authority, in collaboration with tech tipster Assemble Debug, discovered a Gemini FAB in the APK teardown of a beta version of Google Messages. This button, appearing above the "Start Chat" option, promises to simplify access to Gemini. Instead of navigating through menus and initiating a new conversation, users will potentially be able to start chatting with the AI instantly by tapping the FAB.

This streamlined approach represents a significant evolution in how users interact with AI within Google Messages. Previously, initiating a conversation with Gemini entailed starting a new chat and selecting the "Gemini" option. However, this method was not available in all regions, including India. The integration of Gemini with Google Messages first surfaced in March, but only began rolling out to users globally last month. Notably, regions such as India, the UK, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area (EEA) were initially excluded from the update.

While the feature is currently not available even to beta testers, the APK teardown analysis indicates that Google is actively working on its implementation. However, it is crucial to note that features spotted in APK teardowns may not necessarily make it to the final release of the app. The rollout timeline for the Gemini FAB remains unknown.
Editing RCS Messages: Enhancing Communication Flexibility
Beyond the upcoming Gemini integration, Google Messages users will soon benefit from another compelling feature: the ability to edit RCS messages after sending.
Google announced this feature on May 30 along with seven other new features for Android, including the ability to share a user’s current location, edit RCS messages, and more.
Editing RCS messages will provide users with a greater degree of control over their communication. After sending an RCS message, users can tap and hold on the message to reveal the "edit" icon. This allows users to modify their sent messages, offering an added layer of flexibility and reducing the risk of misinterpretations or errors. However, the edit feature is limited to a 15-minute window after sending the message.
