Xiaomi 14 Civi: A Cinematic Vision Under Rs. 50,000?

Xiaomi’s foray into the premium smartphone arena has been marked by strategic moves, especially with the launch of the Xiaomi 14 Civi. This device is a bold statement, challenging established players in the highly competitive sub-Rs. 50,000 segment. It’s the first Xiaomi smartphone to sport the "co-engineered with Leica" tagline, promising a cinematic experience at a price point that was previously unthinkable. While the Xiaomi 12 Pro and Xiaomi 13 Pro tried to capture the premium segment, they were priced well above Rs. 60,000. The Xiaomi 14 Civi aims to bridge the gap between the Redmi Note 13 Pro+ and the Xiaomi 14, offering a compelling alternative for those looking for premium features and a refined design without breaking the bank.

Before diving into our initial impressions, let’s take a look at the price. The Xiaomi 14 Civi, in India, is priced at Rs. 47,999 for the 12GB RAM and 512GB storage variant, and the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage version is available at Rs. 42,999. The device goes on sale in India starting June 20, 2024, at 12:00 PM IST, and will be available on Mi.com, Flipkart, and selected offline retailers across the country.

Xiaomi 14 Civi: Unpacking the Package

The Xiaomi 14 Civi boasts a spec sheet that reads like a wish list for smartphone enthusiasts. It features a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor, a Leica Vario Summilux camera setup with a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 50-megapixel telephoto camera, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera. Naturally, the Leica partnership brings all the expected camera bells and whistles, including two photographic styles – Leica Authentic and Leica Vibrant, along with a plethora of specialized features. Furthermore, the Xiaomi 14 Civi is the only smartphone in India currently to offer dual selfie cameras, a dual 32-megapixel setup housed at the front.

A Sleek and Stylish Design

At 7.4mm thickness and 177 grams, the Xiaomi 14 Civi stands out as one of the slimmest and most lightweight smartphones in its price bracket. To offer some perspective, the Google Pixel 8a measures 8.9mm thick and weighs 188 grams, while the iQOO 12 is 8.1mm thick and tips the scales at 198.5 grams. The OnePlus 12R, also priced under Rs. 50,000, is 8.8mm thick and weighs 207 grams.

The Xiaomi 14 Civi’s 6.55-inch display sits comfortably between the Xiaomi 14’s 6.36-inch and 14 Ultra’s 6.73-inch displays. It boasts a 120Hz refresh rate, 3000nits peak brightness, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+. Rounding out the package is a 4700mAh battery with a 67W fast charging adapter included in the box.

First Impressions: A Promising Start

The Xiaomi 14 Civi feels solid in the hand thanks to its metal frame and comfortable dimensions, making it easy to use one-handed. It is available in three elegant colors – Cruise Blue, Matcha Green, and Classic Matte Edition (which we received for our review). Xiaomi has paid meticulous attention to detail with each colorway, adding to the overall appeal.

The quad-curve display with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is a significant draw, offering a premium feel that complements the sleek design. The camera housing placement echoes the larger 14 Ultra, adding a touch of sophistication.

Camera Highlights: A Cinematic Vision Takes Shape

Thanks to the Leica collaboration, the 14 Civi offers a range of impressive camera capabilities. The Portrait mode with Leica’s authentic styles is a key highlight, promising stunning portrait photography. The dual selfie cameras are sure to revive the trend of front-facing dual cameras, enabling innovative portrait captures and broader perspectives. We will delve into the camera capabilities in our detailed review, comparing its performance to its siblings, the Xiaomi 14 and 14 Ultra.

Performance and Software: Smooth Sailing

The Xiaomi 14 Civi runs on HyperOS based on Android 14, a testament to Xiaomi’s commitment to delivering a smooth and intuitive user experience. During our limited time with the device, it demonstrated impressive performance in everyday tasks and multitasking, while gaming sessions with BGMI and Call of Duty: Mobile were handled effortlessly.
