The Infinix GT 20 Pro: A Mid-Range Gaming Powerhouse?

In a market saturated with gaming smartphones, finding a truly capable device without breaking the bank can be a challenge. The newly launched Infinix GT 20 Pro, boasting a powerful MediaTek Dimensity 8200 Ultimate SoC and a dedicated Pixelworks X5 Turbo chip for gaming, promises to deliver a compelling mid-range experience for gamers. But can this device truly live up to the hype and deliver on its performance and battery life promises? We put it through its paces to find out.

Infinix GT 20 Pro Price in India

The Infinix GT 20 Pro is available in India for Rs. 24,999 for the base model with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, and Rs. 26,999 for the 12GB RAM variant with the same storage. It comes in three striking colors: Mecha Blue, Mecha Orange, and Mecha Silver. Infinix adds a compelling element by offering a GT Pro Gaming Kit, including a GT Mecha Case, GT Cooling Fan, and GT Finger Sleeve, free of charge (though a limited time offer).

Infinix GT 20 Pro Review: Design

The Infinix GT 20 Pro embraces the Cyber Mecha design philosophy introduced with the GT 10 Pro, featuring the company’s signature Mecha Loop Lighting. Inspired by the Nothing Phone’s glyph interface, this design element brings an intriguing visual flair to the device.

The rear panel sports a clear design, showcasing a mostly metallic finish and a camera module reminiscent of its predecessor. The RGB LED lighting module on the back, shaped like a "G," illuminates for calls, notifications, charging, and music. The Party Mode allows you to keep the lights on continuously, though it will impact battery life.

The phone has polished metallic-looking plastic sides offering a smooth, comfortable grip. The power button and volume rocker are conveniently located on the right side, while the SIM tray and USB Type-C port, along with a speaker grille, are at the bottom. Unfortunately, there is no 3.5mm headphone jack.

The top edge features an infrared (IR) blaster, accessible via the quick settings shortcuts for controlling various household appliances. A second speaker grille and subtle "Sound by JBL" branding are also present.

The 6.78-inch display provides a tall screen experience, making one-handed use a bit challenging. However, the slim design and comfortable grip address this issue, especially in landscape mode, a boon for gamers.

Infinix GT 20 Pro Review: Specifications and Software

The Infinix GT 20 Pro packs a powerful punch with its MediaTek Dimensity 8200 Ultimate chip, a Pixelworks X5 Turbo chip for enhanced gaming performance, and up to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM. The 4nm mobile processor boasts a 3.1GHz Arm Cortex-A78 core, three 3.0GHz Cortex-A78 cores, and four 2.0GHz Cortex-A55 cores.

The phone ships with Android 14 out of the box, running on the company’s XOS 14 for GT skin. Infinix promises two major Android version upgrades and three years of security updates, ensuring long-term software support. The in-display fingerprint sensor offers reliable and fast unlocking, taking less than a second.

Connectivity is extensive, featuring 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS, and a USB Type-C port. It also includes a variety of sensors, including an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, e-compass, gyroscope, and proximity sensor. Powering the device is a 5,000mAh battery supported by 45W fast charging with the included brick. The IR blaster allows for convenient control of household appliances.

Infinix GT 20 Pro Review: Performance

Infinix claims the GT 20 Pro can deliver up to 90fps in games supporting higher frame rates. We tested this with Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) and Call of Duty: Mobile, confirming the device’s ability to smoothly handle these demanding titles. Furthermore, Genshin Impact ran seamlessly on "medium" settings, a feat not often achieved by phones in this price range.

Even after an hour of intense gaming, we saw no signs of throttling, even without utilizing the included GT Cooling Fan. It is important to note that our testing occurred during the summer months with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. The magnetically attachable cooling fan effectively cools the back of the phone, though the added wire may be inconvenient during gameplay.

Several optimizations are available for gamers. X-Boost mode offers battery-saving, standard power consumption, and performance modes. The HDR mode subtly enhances visuals, particularly colors, in games like Asphalt 9 and Genshin Impact. E-sports mode optimizes notifications, performance, and other settings for a truly immersive gaming experience.

The phone boasts a clean and efficient XOS 14 for GT interface, with minimal pre-installed apps (surprisingly absent for a phone in this price segment) and no ads. Browsing the web, social media apps, and running other applications proved to be smooth and effortless, with only occasional instances of app reloads when switching between tasks.

The Infinix GT 20 Pro performed exceptionally well in popular benchmark tests. On AnTuTu v10, it scored 895,790 points, while Geekbench produced a single-core score of 1,000 points and a multi-core score of 3,413 points. On PCMark’s Work 3.0 benchmark, the phone scored 18,328 points.

In graphics benchmark tests, the results were equally impressive. Wild Life and Wild Life Unlimited tests yielded scores of 6,514 and 6,441 points, respectively. The Sling Shot test produced a score of 3,865 points, while Sling Shot Extreme reached its "Maxed Out" limit. GFXBench’s Car Chase test saw a 54fps result, and the Manhattan 3.1 and T-Rex tests delivered 101fps and 144fps, respectively.

Infinix GT 20 Pro Review: Display

The Infinix GT 20 Pro features a 6.78-inch full-HD+ (1,080×2,436 pixels) AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 1,300 nits. While the display offers a responsive experience in everyday apps and games, good outdoor visibility, and overall excellent clarity, it falls short of its advertised peak brightness compared to other phones.

Despite this, the display delivers a smooth and enjoyable viewing experience, making it a strong asset for both gaming and multimedia consumption.

Infinix GT 20 Pro Review: Battery Life

Based on our use case, which included frequent use of Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), Genshin Impact, WhatsApp, and YouTube Music, the 5,000mAh battery provided an average screen-on time of 6 hours and 22 minutes.

In our HD battery video loop test, the phone lasted for 17 hours and 32 minutes. Charging using the included cable took about 63 minutes from 0 to 100 percent. A 30-minute charge resulted in 48 percent battery, demonstrating the effectiveness of the 45W fast charging. The bypass charging feature, which maintains battery levels while gaming and prevents excessive overheating without the cooling fan, is a welcome addition.

Infinix GT 20 Pro Review: Cameras

The Infinix GT 20 Pro boasts a 108-megapixel primary rear camera with a Samsung HM6 sensor and optical image stabilization (OIS), a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. For selfies and video calls, there is a 32-megapixel front-facing camera.

The rear cameras offer a mostly satisfactory experience. The 108-megapixel camera captures images with impressive detail, particularly in bright light and close-up situations. The built-in camera app includes a pro mode for fine-tuning settings, though we found the default "AI Cam" mode produced better results.

However, when shooting distant subjects in less-than-ideal lighting conditions, the primary camera sometimes struggles with color accuracy. Brown areas in images can appear darker or slightly reddish. Furthermore, low-light performance, while acceptable, results in images with a noticeable level of smoothening to reduce noise, leading to a loss of detail.

The macro camera is disappointingly mediocre, even in daylight. Edges are blurred, colors lack vibrancy, and detail is noticeably absent. Low-light macro shots exhibit even less detail and excessive noise.

Video recording supports up to 4K/ 60fps in the default camera app, with OIS available up to 4K/ 30fps. Activating the Ultra Steady Mode in the camera app is highly recommended for OIS, particularly when walking while recording videos.

The selfie camera, while decent, requires enabling the 32-megapixel mode through the camera interface for full-resolution image capture. We found the beautification features to be pleasantly absent. Selfie images are crisp in normal lighting, maintaining acceptable quality in low-light situations.

The Infinix GT 20 Pro also incorporates a dual video mode, allowing simultaneous recording with both the primary (rear) and selfie cameras. Dual video recording is seamless and provides the option to adjust the video sizes captured by each camera.

Infinix GT 20 Pro Review: Verdict

So, is the Infinix GT 20 Pro the best performance-driven phone available under Rs. 25,000? For those seeking a powerful device capable of handling most games and demanding tasks without breaking the bank, the answer is a resounding yes. No other phone in this price segment offers the same level of CPU and display performance while gaming. Furthermore, the phone runs a clutter-free operating system, a refreshing change in this price range. The promise of two OS upgrades adds to its long-term value.

However, it’s crucial to consider alternatives like the Samsung Galaxy F55, Motorola Edge 50 Fusion, Nothing Phone 2a, Poco X6 Pro, and OnePlus Nord CE 4. While the Poco X6 Pro surpasses the Infinix GT 20 Pro in benchmark tests, the other phones offer a more balanced experience, including superior camera performance. If peak gaming performance is not your primary concern, these alternative options merit consideration.

The Infinix GT 20 Pro delivers a compelling package for gamers seeking a balance of performance, price, and features. With its powerful processor, dedicated gaming chip, smooth display, and impressive battery life, it stands out as a strong contender in the mid-range gaming smartphone market.
